Capitol Hill as the name suggests, is the neighborhood around and behind the Colorado State Capitol building at Grant and Colfax Ave. Specifically, Capitol Hill is bounded on the north by East Colfax Avenue, on the east by Downing Street, on the south by East Seventh Ave., and on the west by Broadway.

Although the land that now is Capitol Hill was initially considered worthless, in the 1880’s became the location of extravagant mansions for Denver’s wealthiest families of the period. In the 1970’s and 1980’s with increased crime and a decrease in values, many of the original mansions were converted into apartment buildings or offices. Currently there is an approved project gaining momentum called the Colfax redevelopment project, when completed, would add much value to this area to include much of the north boundary of Capital Hill. This and other more recent actions to revitalize the Capital Hill area, suggest that this area will become more valuable over the next years to come. Current points of interest in the Capitol Hill area include:

  • Colorado State Capitol
  • Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception
  • Molly Brown Mansion

The Capitol Hill neighborhood is today, primarily residential, with a significant amount of multi-family housing such as apartments or condos. There are groupings of state government buildings occupying the northwestern corner of the neighborhood area. Along Lincoln Ave., there are a number of commercial high rise office buildings. The Denver Public Schools of Dora Moore Elementary and Morey Middle School are in the neighborhood. Capitol Hill is one of the smaller neighborhoods in Denver as measured by acreage, but has one of the most populous and most dense. In 1990, 92.8% of the area was renters, and only 7.2% were owner occupied. Today, that trend seems to be changing.
